Some costume observations:
Men - Pirates
Men want to be pirates. We used to want to be cowboys and some other stock characters until the Village People used some of the best ones. Now, many of us are afraid go out in our police officer, Indian Chief, or leather-biker outfits for fear of confusion.
Women - Princess becomes Witch
Little girls want to be a princess or something like that. This includes the ballerina, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and other permutations of the princess theme. However, something happens as girls become women. The little princess at some point decides to become a witch instead, and then as she gets a little older - the slutty witch. How does that happen?

Many people I know continue to go as whatever they want, they just prepend 'naughty' and then dress as provacatively as possible while keeping the original costume idea. A good pirate idea: see how far you can go with only using eyepatches.
My daughter has been a princess or some variant thereof for the last 4 years. This year marks the first time she is a witch! I think it's probably because I introduced her to Harry Potter this past summer. :-|
Oh, and my wife is dressing up as a witch as well. Not quite the "naughty" witch, but a dang good looking witch nonetheless!
